The content of this unit explained the different roles and qualities of a good teacher in relation to the varied individual and social backgrounds and personalities of her students. My main takeaway from this unit is clarity. Aside from defining and elaborating on the main teacher roles I currently play (manager/controller, assessor, prompter, tutor, and model) as well as some of the qualities I strongly possess as a good teacher (knowledge, sensitivity, and supportiveness), I also learned about areas where I have room for improvement in more detail. For example, since I work as a teaching assistant to very young to pre-puberty learners, I can still work on my levels of flexibility, resourcefulness, and patience. In other words, I need to be more proactive and quicker on my feet when it comes to dealing with learners who are easily bored, distracted and unmotivated by developing my skills of improvisation and encouragement. I can do this by taking note of my students' interests and finding creative ways to incorporate them in supplementary activities. In line with this, I can also further tap into my roles as a resource/facilitator and observer/monitor by giving my students more freedom to figure things out on their own and learning from their choices in the process.
