Unit 18 discusses modal verbs, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modal verbs like, could, would, should and may can change the meaning and formality of sentences. “I could go to the doctor” and “ I must go to the doctor” have very different meanings. Passive voice is used to when the doer of an action is either not the focus or is completely unimportant. For instance, the focus of the sentence “Matt has been killed” is that Matt is dead and not on what had killed Matt. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs like “look up” or “give out.” There are three types of phrasal verbs, intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
