This chapter was challenging in the explanations of usage. The past tense has proven difficult in my teaching experience to try and explain to students when and why we use theses structures. In regards to the past perfect continuous the usage is very difficult because we use it to talk about actions that were taking a long time or were long withstanding and yet it really isn't clear whether or not the action continues even at the present moment of speaking. The idea that we can't know without further investigation or that we are not 'concerned' with whether the action has been completed or not is in my opinion one of the more cultural components to speaking English. This chapter was good reviewer of things I learned in college and still find difficult to teach in my ESL classrooms here in Japan.
