In this lesson I learned about methods and factors to consider when managing a classroom. This includes the teacher's use of eye contact, gesture, and voice during a lesson. The shape of a classroom, the size, and the seating arrangements can all have an impact on the student's learning experience. In addition, the teacher's positioning (standing versus sitting) and where they are in the room (circulating about, or at the front of the room) can have an impact on learning. I found this a fascinating chapter, because it shows how a teacher must also be an actor/performer. Another important factor in managing a classroom is managing the ration of teacher talking time (TTT) to student talking time (STT). Considering I tend to be a person of few words, I think one part I will have to work on is being comfortable taking up more TTT and asserting myself.
Given that I will be teaching a smaller class of university level students, I think that the circle/horseshoe arrangement of the classroom would be my choice. I want to appear less dominant and encourage a more intimate environment where students can easily work in pairs and collaborate. Hopefully this will also foster rapport between myself and my students.
