During the first lesson, the teacher should establish rapport, learn about the students, play an icebreaker or two, find out the English level of each class member, and set the stage for the course to come. One problem that comes up often is working with students who are on all different levels. The teacher can use different materials for different students, pair stronger students with weaker students, and work at the pace of the middle of most of the class. In large classes, the teacher can use worksheets, use choral repetition to get all students involved, and use group or pair work. For reluctant students, it's important to give them time to prepare before speaking, do group or pair work, and use role-play activities.
