In this lesson I learned about books and materials teachers use in lessons. There are two kinds of materials, authentic and created. Authentic materials include newspaper articles, magazine articles, songs, advertisements, and more. The materials must be carefully selected to suit the level of one's students, and can prove to be fun and engaging. The other kind of material is created materials which the teacher designs to supplement the textbook or their lessons, and might include crosswords, picture stories, word search puzzles, and more.
The lesson them provided a number of sample created materials that a teacher could use in lessons.
Course books are also used for teaching, and include a number of components including a workbook for students, listening materials (e.g. cassettes), a teacher's book, video materials, and more. Course books have many advantages. They provide a balanced learning curriculum, a sense of security to learning, and can help more inexperienced teachers with planning. They also have certain disadvantages. Its content may not interest the students, it may become a crutch for teachers, and it could become boring or repetitious.
When using a course book, a teacher should be judicious in selecting when to omit, replace, supplement, or adapt the material. Some considerations must be made when selecting a course book, including the price, availability, design, methodology, skills, difficulty, topic, and more.
