In this lesson I learned about the basic grammatical structures underlying English. I learned that a simple, general structure for a sentence is subject + verb + noun. Nouns can come in many types, including common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective. Next, I learned about adjectives, which are used to describe the attributes of a noun. English has a specific order in which multiple adjectives must be placed in front of a noun, namely in order of size, age, color, and then material. Superlatives, which describe a high degree of an adjective or adverb, either end in "-est" or if the word is more than three syllables, are preceded by "most." Verbs were also covered in the chapter. Verbs are categorized into two broad categories: transitive (meaning the verb is followed by an object) or intransitive (meaning that the verb stands alone, and cannot be followed by an object). In addition, there are auxiliary verbs, such as the verb "to be," which help form the structure of a sentence but don't describe the actual action of the sentence. Gerunds are -ing forms of a verb that can function as nouns in a sentence. Adverbs are words that modify verbs, or sometimes other adjectives or adverbs. They typically end in -ly and describe things such as time, place, manner, cause, or degree. In this chapter I also learned about pronouns, which can be broken down into more categories such as relative, reflexive, and possessive. It is important to ensure not to confuse possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns, as sometimes the words may be the same but their functioning in the sentence is different.
