Unit 19 covers teaching English language to more specialized groups. Students classified as beginners belong to the first group who are categorized into absolute beginner, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginner and young beginner without Roman alphabet. The teacher would need special skills and psychology in teaching them and be as visual as possible.
The next group is teaching individual students using 1-1 lessons which are less formal. The teacher becomes the partner of the student.
The 3rd group is teaching children that can be one of the most rewarding of all student classes to teach. By using positive encouragement, patient repetition and constant praise, the child develops a sense of self confidence as a vital part of the learning process.
Another growing field of English teaching is to business people, more particularly residing in countries where English is not their common language. Teaching can take place in a number of ways, such as: one to one, in-company groups and in-school groups. Teaching these clients may take longer period of time, say 1 year or more. Business people still need basic grounding in English rather than anything specific. In order to understand their needs, a needs analysis questionnaire should be completed by the clients to identify specific objectives of the course.
Lastly, monolingual classes of students with similar cultural backgrounds will have to take place in their home country, so that the teacher will be able to identify topics that would interest the group.
