In this lesson I learned about the two receptive skills: reading and listening. There are many reasons we might read and listen to something, including to achieve a particular or for entertainment (sometimes both). Reading and listening takes place within our own contexts, and thus the meaning of things is influenced by our prior knowledge. We might read or listen to something to gain a general idea, to gain detailed knowledge, or to scan for something in particular, among others.
The difficulties of listening versus reading is that when you hear something the information is present and then gone, with no record, whereas reading contains all the information on the page so it is easier to review. Another challenge for receptive skills is knowing how much vocabulary should be taught beforehand, and how much should be learned in the process of reading or listening. A teacher must carefully select texts and make sure they are of the appropriate level, will be interesting to the class (or otherwise generate interest), and then test the students' comprehension. Because no single text can cater to all students' interests, its important to vary the topics covered in the class over time so all students are able to be equally engaged.
