This unit showcases 2 teaching videos in a real classroom environment conducted by the same English teacher. In general, the 1st video can make a big contrast with 2nd video in terms of the teacher’s teaching methods/techniques, classroom management skills, and students’ level of participation.
Based on my observations, majority of the students had a lower level of English grammar and listening, which required repeated explanation. However, I can feel their eagerness to learn English was quite strong as they tried their very best to answer what they knew. Most importantly, they were willing to provide a helping hand and encouragement to their fellow classmates especially when they were unsure with teacher’s instructions. This move was very good as it helped to create a more productive English learning setting.
From the 1st video, the teacher failed to engage with the students, his body language was a bit rude too. The instructions of his learning activities and things he wrote on the white board were not clear. As a result, students were confused and frustrated throughout the entire lesson, hence discounting the overall learning quality.
From the 2nd video, the teacher can effectively engage with the students. Firstly, he smiled and introduced himself before the start of his lesson. He called on student’s names and involved all of them by asking everyone questions.
His teaching strategies, e.g. leaving gaps for the students to fill visually and verbally on the white board, also proved to be effective as the students can elicit and express their meaning to fill the gaps.
Moreover, the teacher can also successfully exercise “Mill Drill” as part one of his “Activate Phases” for the students. They were given questionnaire containing questions related to the lesson topic, which definitely helped the students to practice the actual usage of new vocabulary and grammar with their fellow classmates and the teacher.
This chapter gives me a great deal of learning value as these two videos can illustrate the effectiveness when applying “Straight Arrow ESA” lesson plan. From there, I can also see students’ immediate reaction too, which gives me a good reference to anticipate what will happen in my future lessons.
These videos are highly relevant, which helped me to visualize what I have learnt from unit 3 and 7 in relation to various ESA structures.
