In Unit 11 of the 120-hour course, I learned about the two receptive skills that exist for any language: reading and listening. The motives for reading and listening can be split into two categories: for a purpose and for entertainment. To ensure English students make the most of their receptive skills, there are a few measures teachers can take. One way teachers can help the students is by choosing the reading/listening materials carefully. Ideally, teachers should be able to introduce their students to a mix of authentic and non-authentic texts. Another way teachers can assist the students is by pre-teaching difficult vocabulary before having the students read it or listen to it. Picking interesting topics also proves beneficial.
