In Unit 20 of the 120-hour TEFL course, I learned about some of the typical issues teachers face in the classroom. One problem teachers often experience is not knowing exactly how to approach the first lesson of a given position. Whenever a teacher meets a group of students for the first time, it is vital that he or she doesn't automatically delve into the textbook. Instead, the teacher should strive to establish rapport with the class. That means that the teacher should get to know the students, and in return, the students should learn a bit about the teacher. A second problem teachers encounter is getting the students motivated to learn English. Luckily, there are many warmers that can be used to liven up the class. Hangman, tongue twisters, and memory games are examples of warmers. A third problem teachers confront regularly is students wanting to use their native language. To ensure students maximize their English usage, teachers should choose activities that are appropriate for their level. Furthermore, they should be clear about any instructions they give for an activity. Lastly, teachers should put an emphasis on the need to utilize English. To accomplish this, teachers can simply ignore comments of another language and/or encourage students to rely on English alone.
