When beginning the first lesson of a class, the teacher should try to establish rapport and begin building relationships within the class. The coursebook should not be used at the first class. Warmers and games that encourage the students and teacher to talk about topics or themselves will help to break the ice. If it is a class where everyone is new to each other, even more emphasis should be placed on building rapport. Some other challenges can be large classes or classes with students of varying ranges of ability. With large classes, whole class activities and one on one activities may take too long. Pairs and groups will allow each student more opportunity to be involved. With varying degrees of ability, the teacher could divide students into groups based on language levels, give them different tasks with the same materials, pair stronger students with weaker ones, or do nothing. Students should be encouraged to use English and the teacher should be very clear with instructions and make sure all students understand them. With reluctant students, pair work, role play, and controlled practice can give students confidence and encourage them to speak.
