The content of this unit provides learners with a clear review when it comes to teaching “parts of speech” to the students; especially those are within beginner or elementary levels.
Specifically, the students will gain more solid understanding towards how to form a grammatically correct sentence, including definite article, adjective, verb, preposition and noun, along with some good examples for illustration.
In a deeper level, this unit also discusses the usage of gerunds (as subject or object), pronouns (e.g. personal, possessive, reflexive & relative), and conjunctions in various situations.
This chapter is extremely helpful to recap English teachers’ understanding too, as sometimes we are too comfortable in using fundamental English grammar, while we may not be able to clearly explain to the students what are actually using or why we are using it.
One of the recap knowledge for me is that there are actually 5 types of adverbs, including Manner (e.g. slowly), Place (e.g. above & there), Time (soon & then), Degree (e.g. really & much) and Frequency (e.g. once & always).
In this regard, I have to be more mindful when teaching multiple adverbs in one sentence. We will need to follow a general sequence - place, manner and time, such as “He will drive there slowly tomorrow because of the rain”.
The second recap knowledge for me is that there are two types of verbs, namely, transitive and intransitive verbs. In particular, intransitive verb is a verb that cannot be followed directly by an object, and it does not do anything to anyone or anything, e.g. go, fall and depart. I learnt that these intransitive verbs or actions often tend to associate with time, place or frequency, which I can highlight this observation to my students too during lessons.
