In unit eighteen we discussed modal verbs, passive versus active voice, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. Modal verbs, such as can, could, may, or might, are used to express ideas like obligation, probability, permission, ability, or advice. Next we discussed the passive and the active voice. In the active voice the one doing the action is the focus of the sentence. The passive voice, however, is used to take the focus off the actor. This is used when the actor is not known, not important, or we do not wish to say. Relative clauses are dependent clauses that are used to modify a noun. They can be either defining or non-defining. A defining relative clause does not have commas and is essential in the information being said. A non-defining relative clause is surrounded by two commas and is not essential to the sentence. Lastly, we discussed phrasal verbs. There are intransitive verbs, transitive separable verbs, and transitive inseparable verbs. Intransitive verbs can not be followed by a direct object. Transitive separable verbs either have object pronouns between the verb and the particle or they have an object noun, which can be either before or after the particle. With transitive inseparable verbs the object phrase or object pronoun come after the particle.
