Unit three – Theories, Methods & Techniques
This unit is an overview of different theories, methods and techniques used by teachers with a primary focus on the ESA method. The Engage Study and Activate methodology is the basis of this TEFL course.
I thought this unit covered a lot of good material. I am sure I will use it as a reference in the near future. Especially the examples of ideas given on pages 11 thru 18. I laughed when I saw “Hangman” as I have some very good memories playing this game growing up.
As a foreign language learner myself. When I reflect on my own experience with language learning. I can now say the methods used were a “mélange” of techniques. Mostly task-based learning with a little PPP and grammar translation. I agree that with grammar-translation, I learned more about the language, than how to speak the language. I still often search for a direct translation but with languages that is not always possible. ESA methodology certainly makes sense (in theory) and I look forward to putting into practice in a classroom.
