This unit focuses on modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. Passive and active voice are different ways to write sentences that put the focus on different subjects (the doer or recipient of the verb). Modals are words used with verbs to add meaning: may, can, must, should, could, etc. modify the verb and are used to request permission, show levels or certainty or formality, give permission, show obligation, reference ability or advice, etc. They may also change based on verb tense. Phrasal verbs are verbs with participles that act together as one unit in a sentence; there are three types. These are more challenging aspects of the English language but are helpful to share with advanced students so they can understand particularities of sentences and their meanings.
