Conditionals are sentences that use 'if' or 'when' to refer to past, present or future possibilities. The 'if' clause or the main clause can come in the first part of the sentence. There are five conditionals: zero, first, second, third or mixed (which is a combination of second and third conditionals). This unit also addresses reported speech compared to direct speech. When someone reports on something or someone else, the verb tense can change. For example, if the direct speech uses the present simple, the reported speech would be past simple. However, past perfect and past perfect continuous remain the same for reported speech.
