As with the Receptive Skills discussed in the previous unit (reading and listening), the Productive Skills of speaking and writing are equally important when learning, comprehending and using a new language. In a classroom setting, writing can ofter get overlooked as teachers don't have a tendency not to want to "waste" time developing this skill. As I have learned in this unit, that can be a grave mistake is a student's overall comprehension of a new language. All four skills must be mastered to have a true grasp of the language. Speaking is perhaps the most "glamorous" of the skills, as students get the most quick and direct feedback from using their speaking skills. However, this confidence will be quickly diminished if the other skills are not up to par. Therefore, teachers must strive to make every lesson develop and nurture each of these basic, yet vital, language skills.
