Unit three is focused on theories, methods and techniques of learning. The unit presents the most common methods and techniques in use such as: grammar translation, audio-lingualism, presentation-practice-production, task-based learning, communicative language teaching, community learning language, the silent way, suggestopaedia and the lexical approach. Each method has its positive and not so positive side but in general when teaching a new language there are few things teachers need to be aware of: students need as much exposure to language as possible, they need a certain amount of input from the teacher (need to be motivated), communicative tasks offer real learning possibilities, anxiety and stress can negatively influence students learning abilities, where possible students should be encouraged to discover language for themselves (opportunity to use). An effective teaching method called ESA (engage, study, activate) was introduced by Jeremy Harmer. This is the methodology this course is based around. These three elements are always present in a lesson but the order can vary. However, it is important that the lesson always starts with the engage stage and finishes with the activate stage. We can have a straight arrow ESA lesson where the teacher takes the lesson in the ESA order; a boomerang ESA lesson where you can have more than one Activate stage and a patchwork ESA lesson requiring a lot of mini-sequences. Examples of activities suitable for each phase have been discussed followed by the correction/ giving feedback techniques (self-correction; student-student correction; teacher-student correction). The unit ends with a lesson planning guidance notes.
