This lessons tells about many different teaching methods for ESL and highlights all of their strengths and weaknesses.
It then goes on to explain the basic structures of an ESA style lesson. ESA stands for Engage, Study, Activate. In this model, each lesson should have at least one of each of these phases. Engage is an introductory activity to capture student interest. It should be a lighthearted fun type of activity. It may be related to the lesson content to follow but doesn't necessarily need to be so. In the study phase, this is where the language input happens. You learn new vocabulary, new language structures and do guided practice. Finally, there is the Activate stage, which is an activity to demonstrate student creativity and fluency in the newly acquired and practiced language points. Activities may include role-plays, mill drills or the production of stories or travel brochures or other materials displaying what was learned.
You can vary the ESA structure to add interest. You may choose a boomerang style lesson with the setup E-A-S-A. You may also try a patchwork approach which could look something like E-A-S-E-E--S-A
