This unit covered the various aspects of teaching pronunciation to ESL students as well as the problems a teacher will encounter when doing so. Ideas such as intonation and stress are difficult for non-native English speakers to master because most words are not written as they are pronounced, and it takes a long time for students to discover how to say words and sentences correctly (as well as figuring out how different types of intonation affect a sentence's meaning). Students can perform vocal exercises such as humming, singing, and analyzing stress diagrams in order to improve intonation and stress.
Phonetics is a subject that needs to be taught to students alongside intonation and stress. Students must learn how to move their tongues when making certain sounds, as this prevents them from forming bad habits in pronunciation that they will have difficulty fixing later on. Showing students mouth diagrams and performing sounds are good ways to expose them to English phonetics. Teachign them how to read phonetic script is necessary so that they will be able to use reference materials such as dictionaries that make use of this alphabet.
