This unit briefly covered various types of tests and their purposes, along with the importance of evaluating students.
There are several different reasons for testing students, such as determining what level they are for class placement, what they know in order to plan future lessons, how much they have learned/far they have progressed in a certain course, and practicing for extracurricular exams such as standardized proficiency tests. No matter what the purpose though, when assessing our students it is important to keep a balance between the four skills. It is also important to give a steady flow of feedback so learners can gauge their own level and progress. This is because some types of exams can be seen as ways to purely test retention rather than actual knowledge or proficiency, though most if not all learning institutions will require such assessments of their students.
The unit also mentioned some popular proficiency tests, such as IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge Assessment. It noted the use of TOEIC in Korea and Japan as well. I am actually more familiar with the Eiken, which is Japan exclusive. A lot of my students take one of these two tests though, or perhaps go for IELTS. I help them practice one on one or in small groups, and administer practice tests. Like the chapter stated, it is important to get the exact structure of the exam down so students can familiarize themselves with the format they will have to follow. Personally I do not like such testing, as it seems I am only helping students memorize a certain routine rather than learn any useful English.
