Teachers may run across certain problems when engaging with new and/or veteran students. Sometimes it can be difficult to break the ice with a group of students that does not know each other and is not familiar with ESL instruction. In this case, teachers need to focus more on interaction in the first lessons, and they must try to avoid grammar at all costs so as to not demotivate students. Large classrooms are also sometimes difficult to manage. In this case, teachers should try to have students work in pairs, and they should also have students take turns leading specific groups so that they (the students) become "obliged" to speak English (putting people in positions of power does wonders). Some students may also be reluctant to participate in class, whether this be due to self-esteem issues or just general discomfort with interacting with groups. In this case, teachers can try to find time to work with the students outside of class, or they can have students do more individual work at home (like recording themselves) so they do not feel anxious when practicing their English. Finally, listening tapes can be problematic for students, as it takes time for their ears to adapt to English. Teachers should make sure that when they do listenign exercises, the equipment works correctly and is audible, that students are informed of potentially difficult vocabulary before they listen to the recording (or watch the video), and that they are able to listen to the recording/watch the video multiple times.
