The lesson seemed very straightforward as a native speaker of English. However, as I thought about how one would go about teaching such concepts like conditional statements and reported speech, it became evident why this lesson would be difficult. Outside of memorizing tenses, it seems like non-native speakers will have to much more thinking about the context of the direct speech. This aspect of reporting speech seems to be something that will require much work in order to unpack and make clear for non-native speakers. Conditional statements, especially mixed conditionals with two or more conditions, are also ones that could provide problematic due to the nature of considering hypothetical within speech.
