This unit addressed some of the concerns that I had as I was nearing the end of the course. It would be nice if all students were motivated and willing to participate during every class, but there will inevitably be students who are reluctant and it is nice to know techniques that have worked for professionals before me. It is important not to give up on certain things, like listening activities, just because students are finding it difficult. However, there is a balance because you do not want to constantly force one type of activity all the time. Also, I remember some of my Spanish classes (other subjects as well) that were sort of awkward because nobody knew each other, which made us hesitate to participate. When I start teaching, I will be very aware of the environment and the type of class/students. There can be a wide range of skill level within the same class, so I like the idea of pairing stronger students with weaker students to try to balance out the class. I have been one of those "weaker" students, and I have learned a lot from the stronger students in my Spanish classes. It can be embarrassing, in a way, when you mess up in front of more experienced students, but I think that is a very efficient way to learn.
