In this unit, I learned all about Phonology and Pronunciation along with techniques on how to teach these to students. Intonation, or the variation in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, can be taught through nonsense words, gesture, humming and singing, or board work. Intonation is important because the same sentence can have several different meanings if the intonation changes. Stress, or the 'strong' part of the sentence, can also change the meaning of the sentence. This can be taught through contrasting sounds, gestures, choral work, board work, and stress marks. The phonemic alphabet is really helpful for students to be able to correctly pronounce a word or sentence by focusing only on the sounds and not the spelling. In this articulation section, we learned about the placement of the tongue for different sounds along with the different ways we use air to create different sounds. This is such an important concept when teaching students how to speak in a more 'native' way, and also helps us explain why they may have an accent.
