Unit 19 is devoted to teaching of special groups. The first part of this unit is about begginers. As a rule beffiner learners are devided into following categories. The are :
The absolute beginner – a student who has had absolutely no exposure to English at all.
The false beginner – a student who has been exposed to English prior to the class, but has not retained much English. They will probably know a few sentences or nouns.
The adult beginner – an adult who has made their own decision to learn English, for whatever reasons. As they are adults and have consciously chose to learn the language, they are likely to be highly motivated.
The young beginner – they tend to pick up language much faster than their adult counterparts. However, it usually not their own choice. It is most likely a parental choice, or made mandatory by the school system, which means they lack the motivation of their adult counterparts.
The beginner without the Roman alphabet – students whose native tongue does not use the Roman alphabet. They will need to work much harder on their basic literary skills, having no exposure to the alphabet before. The next part of the unit is devoted to teaching tips for begginers. I would like to indicate the most important one from my point of view. I think that teacher always shold be aware of students` needs. You should have a lot of visual aids to demonstrate not only the lesson, but instructions as well. You should avoid of using the students’ native tongue, and would politely instruct the students to use English in the classroom as much as possible. Additionally, I would employ a lot of group work and give many drills and repetition. Mostly some students prefer to have on – to-one lessons. As for this kind of lesson it can have it`s pros and cons. You need to focus your lesson to the needs, interests, strengths and weaknesses of one person. As rule these students are usually more motivated. The next part of the unit devoted to teaching of children. I think that the most important, you must keep their attention. All these requires experience, humor, energy and patience. You need frequent changes in activities to avoid boredom. Games are vital, as well as positive reinforcement (they really do just love stickers, toys, some small presents). Learning has to be fun for children, or they won’t do it! Youy need to give clear and fun expalnation during the lesson as a rule these lessons demand a lot of efforts and preparation. The next part of the unit is about Business English. We as teachers should bear in mind that we can not be professional in English. We neeed to provide to our students general business approach. We need to elicit their needs and interests. As rule some of these students are highly motivated some are so motivated not. But if we discover their interests and needs. I would like to know what is it exactly that the student expects at it’s end. I would like to give a diagnostic test at the beginning of the course, to assess the different levels in the class. It is vital to know as much as possible. You need to know about the students` work as much as possible. How they work, what is there work about and etc. You need to stay in contact with your students. So you need to pay attention to a lot of details. The next part is about monolingual and multilingual class. I think I would prefer a multilingual class. If English is not a mother language , they are forced to communicate in English. Forcing them to speak English through these projects can only improve their fluency. Additionally, group work is likely to lead to friendship outside of the classroom. Multulingual and multicultural surrounding is great. Thank you ITTT!
