This Unit is about teaching of pronunciation and phonology. I can agree that this area of language is always regarded to be a challenge for students and teachers. I think that teaching of pronunciation should be integrated into lesson. As for my personal experience I can say that pronunciation should be always a part of each lesson. For some students learning of pronuncitaion is vital. Phonology is quite wide and complicated area of language. The first this we should come across is intonation. Intonatopn makes our speech more emotionally coloured. When we are aware of the fact how and where to use intonation our speech will become more natural. The intonation helps us to colour our speech emotionally and underline where we want to make emphasis. The main tools we can use for teaching intonation are: nonsense words, show intonation by gesture , humming, singing and board writing with arrows. The main wide area is stress. The stress is used for emphasis. When you want to emphasise some word or words in a sentence. The special attention shouls be paid to stress in words. Here we should pay attention to syllables and compound words. This area is quite complicated but once you get it there will no difficulties. The main techniques for stress learning are: contrastive stress, by gesture, choral work, underlining on the board and stress marks. As a rule in every language there are some interesting sound joining. The main sound joining in English are: linking , sound dropping, sound changing, extra lettering . This sound joining is happening because of the natural reason. When our articulation organs in the flow of speech combine and somehow change sounds. As teachers we should help our student to hear and understand the main types of sound joining. As it was said in the unit it`s not laziness that`s how we speak. The next part id devoted to phonemic symbols. Our students need to know these symbols. They are helpful, when you take dictionary and open it each word is written by phonemic symbols. This is very helpful for students` pronunciation. When they can easily read these symbols they can cope with pronunciation. The next section is about articulation. We have wide system of articulation organs. They are : tongue, lyranx, glottis, alveolar ridge, hard palate and soft palate. Each sound has it`s own “production” area. We use them unconsciously but as the teachers we should describe and where and how sounds are formed. The next area is devoted to manner of articulation. They are: plosive, fricative, nasal, lateral , affricative and approximant. The main techniques are: visuals , tongue twisters and peer dictation. As for my personal point of view the most useful are tongue twisters. This unit is great ! Thank you ITTT!
