The receptive skills are listening and reading, because learners do not need to produce language, they receive and understand it. The key difference between listening and reading is that when learners listen to information, they have much less support than when they are working with the written word on the page. It is important to follow the stages of a reading and listening lesson: pre-teach vocabulary, gist reading or listening, detailed reading or listening, post-reading or listening stage (students respond to what they have read or listened to)
