This unit discussed 2 ESA issues; conditionals & reported speech. Conditionals are basically sentences that contain "if", or similar words such as "when", that refer to past, present, and future possibilities. There are 2 clauses in this kind of sentence, the "if" clause, the conditional word...and the main clause, which is the action or state that can be realized as a result of the "if" clause. The order of these 2 clauses can be switched in a sentence. There are 5 main conditionals: the Zero, first, second, third and mixed clause. Reported speech occurs when a person turns information gathered in a conversation and relates it to another person. In this case, the form of the verb changes into a positive form, while the tense generally stays the same. Backshifting is common in this case, and events and things take a step backward in time and/or physical location.
