This unit focuses on potential problems in the ESL classroom, and ways to minimize and deal with them. First, is the first lesson situation, in which it is essential for a teacher to establish rapport and set the tone for the class. An ESL teacher will face both existing groups, and new groups of students, with the essential difference being that the students will respectively know, or not know each other. An experienced teacher will not resort to a course book during the first lesson, but instead focus on using fun, short activities to establish the rapport. Another potential problem in the classroom is the varying levels of english ability amongst the students. A teacher can use different materials and split class, use same materials and split class, pair stronger/weaker students, or do nothing differently during lessons. Large classes require a teacher to focus on classroom control, as well as involving all students in the activities. Use of a student's native language can be a problem, particularly in monolingual classrooms. Reluctant students, or students who are not participating in activities, can be assisted by using activities that create a "safer" environment from them to express themselves in. Finally, using tapes to build listening skills can be difficult for students, but are very important therefore should be used and repeated as per student needs.
