In this unit, we discussed the parts of speech, their distinct functions and the rules regarding their uses. Grammar includes many forms and uses and both teachers and students admit to its complexity. I have not really put much thought in identifying each word in a sentence as to what part of speech they are categorized into. But now that I think about it, categorizing the parts of speech makes it easier for me to consider and apply the grammatical rules and understand how words complement each other in sentences by combining grammatically with other words.
The simple explanations in this unit clarified the following grammar rules that I find tricky:
1. the order of several adjectives (since there is no consensus on this topic, I will stick with the DQQSASCPP order that my previous English teacher taught me);
2. the correct use of the articles (especially the “Do not use” and “Do use” part); and
3. the position of adverbs in a sentence.
This unit made me reassess the way I teach grammar to my students. Grammar is a grey area in teaching and learning English. There are always exceptions to the rules applied. Some sources are even contradictory. It is important to be as concise as possible in introducing grammar rules, patterns, and terms, just like this unit does. Also, it would be helpful to provide plenty of practice to my students especially from a controlled classroom scenario to real-life setting.
