This section talked about how to evaluate and test ESL students. First and foremost, teachers must recognize that it is important to assess student progress on a frequent and periodic basis in order to better meet their learning needs. For example, a weekly assessment of students can show a teacher if he/she should include more supplemental material or time on vocabulary or other skills that the students may be falling behind on. A placement test is typically given to students before the start of the EFL program. The placement test determines the English level in which students place. A diagnostic test is typically given at the start of the program in order for the teacher to see what the students already know. A periodic test shows the teacher the information that students have retained over a few weeks, or months. Achievement tests are typically taken at the end of students' program in order to see how much they have improved their English since day one. External examinations are not typically given at ESL schools, but rather are taken at a separate institution and the results of these tests are a gauge for universities or countries that require students to have some level of English proficiency.
