Unit 1 is an overview of the different roles a teacher must take on, as well as an attempt at helping teachers understand their students better. The roles a teacher must take on are various, but each is an important part of helping students learn. How much of each role is appropriate for a teacher to take on in a given class is dependent upon many factors, including the age and level of the students. Age has a great influence upon how a teacher proceeds as adults and children have very different learning styles and appropriate materials are different. Knowing the level of students is also important for preparing appropriate class materials and activities.
Overall I thought this unit was a helpful introduction to teaching as a relationship between a teacher and their students. It has attempted to equip TEFL teachers will the ability to identify when they need to make a change to their teaching or lesson plans to better suit the students and their learning. I found the emphasis on the importance of student learning over teaching very insightful.
