This unit explained the roles of modal auxiliary verbs in English grammar. Modals are most often used to express obligation, possibility/probability, ability, advice, and permission.Modal verbs can also be used to express different degrees of formality. For example, saying "Would you mind if I borrowed your pen?" is much more formal than saying, "Can I borrow your pen?". This unit also explained 'passive voice'. In the passive voice, the object of an active verb turns into the the subject of the passive verb. The most common usages of the passive voice is in situations where the performer of an action is unknown, not important, or the speaker does not want to say. This chapter also covered relative clauses, which are groups of words that contain a subject and a verb. Independent clauses are complete sentences, whereas dependent clauses need an independent clause to support it in order to complete the sentence. A relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. This chapter also explained phrasal verbs , which are multi-word verbs that consist of a verb and one or two particles.
