Course books and lesson materials are an important part of any classroom. They are somewhat essential at times and are good aids for beginner teachers. Also, students expect these items when they are in class. Course books generally come in a series: the student book, the workbook, and the teachers’ resource book. However, the teacher not only should use these materials, but also add supplements, replace information, or omit things that are not applicable to their class. Nevertheless, there are down sides to using a course book series entirely for class. The issues may be that the students, as well as the teachers, may not like the materials and it maybe dis-interesting, outdated, or does not cover the necessary information needed for class.
For supplements, we must consider two kinds of material. We should look for authentic materials and created materials. An authentic material is anything that is from a newspaper, brochure, or even a restaurant menu. It can be used as an example and is also a great prop to share with the class. They are also usually readily available at any time, but should be selected very carefully depending on the grade level you are teacher. On the other hand, created materials stimulate interest and can be created for a certain grade level, unlike authentic materials. However, created material may take more of the teacher’s time to make.
Lastly, when teachers prepare for class they must remember to always double check their supplemental course materials or electronic devices before class. If an issue arises during class, this can create a major issue in the class room and the teacher will lose valuable time for teaching. If the teacher pays attention to detail and sets aside enough time for class preparation, class time will go smoothly and the students will enjoy the class.
