In this Unit, I learned a lot of different ways to evaluate students' levels and progress. It is very important for both teachers and students. Because it will help us make sure that most students achieve their goals continually. There are a lot of ways to assess a student's language level, such as Tutorial, Evaluation and Test.
Tutorial is usually suitable for small-group classes. Teachers can conduct tutorial at the end of the classes, in the last ten minutes. It may not be suitable for most of the classes in China, as the number of students in a class is always over 30. So a lot of English teachers in China choose to use different kinds of tests to evaluate students' levels and progress.
Students must take a placement test before their first English class. The placement test results can help teachers to check whether the students start at the right level or not. After the placement test, students usually take the Diagnostic tests at the beginning of the course. Teachers will decide where to start and what the key points are.
If students are going to take external examinations like IELTS, teachers will provide Practice Tests which is similar with the real IELTS examination for students to prepare.
Evaluating by students is also a good way. Teacher can use a survey to understand students' feelings.
