This section taught me about the importance of pronunciation and phonology in English. Pronunciation is often overlooked by students because English learners are often more focused on trying to understand the meaning of language rather than how it should be physically executed. However, English teachers should point out proper pronunciation because correct pronunciation is important in accurate communication. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sound. This unit covers the various muscles and body parts that we use when making certain sounds - we can use this information to help students accurately produce these sounds. Intonation describes he change in pitch and volume in a sentence. For example, a fall and rise in pitch within a sentence can indicate that the speaker expects a response from the receiver. Studying the stress within words and sentences can also help us understand the specific contexts of what is being communicated.
