This unit provides a useful overview of classroom management. As in previous units, it points out the importance of teachers balancing being friendly and relaxed while still maintaining discipline and order in the class. Simple actions matter including eye contact and gestures to engage students and aid in explanations. The grouping of students depending on the lesson or activity can also be helpful by placing students in a large circle for discussion or smaller groups or pairs. Pending space and furniture, the physical arrangement of the classroom and the possibility of seating arrangements can be used strategically, although each arrangement has its pros and cons. For instance, rows are good for lecture but not for discussion. The teacher's position is something that stuck out to me in this unit, as it is an aspect I had not considered. Standing could show authority while sitting could make students feel more comfortable while reading independently. This unit also emphasized being careful regarding personal attention--do not favor individuals. Providing clear and consistent instructions aids in productivity. I thought the section on building rapport with students was very important, as students need to respect you in order to engage and also be disciplined in your classroom.
