Bern, Wisconsin TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
When teaching beginners we have to take into consideration in which group they belong: absolute or false beginners, young or adult students or even beginners without Roman alphabet. Absolute beginners have no English at all, unlike false ones who may have studied but haven't retained much L2. Young learners may lack motivation as opposed to adults but usually learn more easily. When teaching students whose native language doesn't use Roman alphabet, we have to practice reading and writing a lot. With individual students, we don't have to worry about mixed levels and students are very motivated. However, there are some activities that are not possible to do, so a teacher should plan for the appropriate (1 to 1) activities. Teaching children can be very interesting. They are curious, which is a great motivating factor. However, children do have a shorter attention span so we have to be very careful when planning a lesson. Also, a teacher should speak slowly and clearly, pay attention to intonation and show appreciation. When teaching ESP, clients can vary a lot regarding age and L2 level. They are mostly motivated but can be tired, since the classes are often held after their working hours. We have to be able to meet and balance the needs of the company and clients, by using needs analysis and need negotiation. Multilingual classes include students from different countries, therefore their common language is English, unlike in monolingual classes. It is very likely that the students in monolingual classes will have similar L2 problems.
