Focusing on some of the more nuanced aspects of English grammar, this unit discusses modal verbs and the passive voice. Auxiliary verbs express different forms of modality, conveying different ideas depending on which modal verb is used. Changing a single word from ‘can’ to ‘may’ impacts the message, causing the phrase to become more formal when implementing ‘may’. Passive construction is another feature that changes meaning with a small difference in construction. It occurs when you make the object of an action into the subject of a sentence. That is, whoever or whatever is performing the action is not the grammatical subject of the sentence. Another concept that is discussed in this unit is phrasal verbs, which hinge on transitive and intransitive verbs. Being that phrasal verbs can be a tough topic to explain, I like that the unit recommends teaching it in a more uncontrolled practice, which would likely reduce learner anxiety and cause better understanding of the topic.
