The importance of receptive skills can be easily underrated by people who believe that language production is the most important part of learning a new language. It is however, the first skill truly developed by the language student. As noted in a previous unit, oftentimes a students ability to understand the content of a text or an audio clip is at a more advanced level than the students ability to produce content, meaning that many times it is the level of their receptive skills that is a better indicator or students language abilities. The Language section of the unit discussing pre-teaching vocabulary, as well as authentic and non-authentic materials, was the most advantageous for my own learning.
