This unit examines the forms and the usages of modal verbs, the passive and active voice, relative clauses and it gives also an overview of phrasal verbs. It explains how the modals are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb and to express a number of ideas such as obligation, possibility, permission or prohibition, ability and advice. Also they can be used to express different degrees of formality. For what it concerns relative clauses, the unit explains the difference between defining relative clauses and non-defining ones; the former are essential to the meaning of the sentence, the latter one aren’t. When it describes the passive voice, I found the table that shows how the tenses change from the active sentence to the passive one very helpful and clear. Finally, this unit describes three types of phrasal verbs, intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable making the difference very clear also thanks to a number of examples. For each of these grammatical rules this units also gives very creative teaching ideas that will help teachers to pass on this knowledge effectively.
