This unit has given detailed approach to the use of various modal auxiliary verbs such as can ,could ,shall, should, must, might etc. These can be used for expressing attitude like ability, request, obligation, possibility &so on interchangeably according to the level of formality & meaning we wish to convey.
When it comes to structures, modal auxiliary verbs are always used with other verbs & has no special forms in third person singular.Teaching ideas such as guessing the abilities of partners e.g. John can swim, making request using same e.g. Can I learn to swim; talking about remote future possibilities e.g.
I might become a millionaire.
An auxiliary or helping verb is indispensable when it comes to expressing an idea in the passive .The passive voice is formed by combining ‘verb to be’ with past participle of principle verb, sticking to the same tense.
We have also learned more about relative clauses such as Non-defining relative clause giving more non-essential information about noun, linked by relative pronouns, separated by commas & particularly common in written English & Defining relative clause identifying the noun, commonly used while speaking & sometimes replacing relative pronouns with ‘that’. Moreover, this unit has also thrown light on transitive & intransitive phrasal verbs as it is an important element while teaching English & can be used over any topic to make it more varied & interesting.
