In this lesson I have learned that there are 9 true modal auxiliary verbs: can, could, might, may, must, should, shall, will and would. They can be used for different purposes, such as: ability, advice, deduction, obligation, offer, permission, possibility, prediction, prohibition and promise. Modal auxiliary verbs have no tense, They have to be adapted to the main verb.
I have also studied the active/passive voice and its usage. In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive voice. In this case, the "doer" of the action is not important and sometimes, not even mentioned. Only transitive verbs are used in the passive voice. For both the active and passive, the tense of the sentence remains the same.
There are 3 categories of clauses: independent (complete sentence), dependent (not complete sentence, it needs to be connected to an independent clause) and relative (dependent clause that modifies a noun). Relative clauses can be defining and non-defining.
Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs, consist of a verb plus one or two particles. There are 3 types: transitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
