This unit is yet another technical unit as it covers grammar. Unit 18 teaches modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. Modals seems to be one of the easier grammar to teach to students as I feel it is rather straightforward. The teaching ideas suggested for teaching modals are interesting and can allow students to learn this effectively. With personalisation tailored to the class, the Activate stage can be a productive time for them. EFL students would be able to grasp this concept after learning the English grammar covered in the earlier units of this course. In addition, passive voice is another grammatical system that can be understood easily. This would probably be taught early on in the semester.
On the other hand, relative clauses and phrasal verbs are more challenging set of grammar. As a native speaker myself, I found them rather tricky to understand and had to have a couple more read-throughs. Hence, it is my opinion that when teaching these two grammatical systems, more lesson time would need to be dedicated to them. There are three categories of relative clauses and three basic types of phrasal verbs. This ensures students completely understand the first category and type before progressing on to the next one. As mentioned in the unit, it is also important that as teachers, we use these two grammatical systems naturally in class. This will familiarise students to them.
