This unit covers modal verbs more in depth, explaining their uses and differences more clearly. Modal verbs like “should” and “have to” may seem very similar, but have subtle differences in meaning/usage as well as differences in form. The passive voice changes the perspective of a sentence or omits the actor. Like with indirect dialogue, the passive voice enables students to report on things and better understand news or discussion of events. Finally, there are phrasal verbs. These types of verbs make use of prepositions to create a verb phrase with a meaning different from just the base verb. These can be difficult for students because the placement of the direct object varies depending on the type of phrasal verb and whether or not the direct object is a noun or pronoun. As with many tricky concepts, it can help to use phrasal verbs occasionally in class to model proper use and expose students to them.
