Unit six went over proessional employment and development for teaching business English. It began by going over the general do’s and don’t’s of ESL teaching, such as being conservative and not gossiping or expressing political/religious views right away. It also covered the questions one should be able to answer when looking for work abroad. Things like population distribution, political/religious denominations, languages spoken, and cultural taboos are all things one should know before agreeing to work in a new country. Next, the unit covered where to look for a business English teaching job; advertisements, online, TEFL sites, etc. It covered the benefits of applying to a job in-country, such as being able to visit a potential area of employment and meeting potential coworkers. Should one get an interview for a job abroad, this unit covered 50 common questions one can ask their potential employer, while reminding that one should never ask too many questions at a job interview. The unit also covered how to structure a business English resume/cover letter, and what kinds of exams or associations teachers can look into to better support their career advancement. The unit ended with a supplements section of websites a teacher can use to be more effective in the classroom.
