There are many different methods for teaching. Different methods may be more useful and applicable depending on the situation, culture, and skill level of the students. The ESA model for a lesson is very useful. E stands for engage. This stage of the lesson involves encouraging each student to speak English. There should be no correction during this phase, but rather it should be a comfortable free space to practice. Techniques to use during the Engage stage include activities such as talking with a partner about a specific subject, or making lists on the board of favorite things. The S in ESA stands for study. This is the section of the lesson where the teacher does the most instruction and correction. This can be done through worksheets, crossword, and many other means. The A in ESA stands for Activate. This is the part of the lesson where the students apply what they have learned in the study section. This can be done through a variety of ways including surveys and group debates. The straight arrow ESA lesson involves these three steps in that order, but this is not the only way to apply the ESA model. The boomerang ESA lesson involves an Engage, Activity 1, Study, Activity 2 structure. The patchwork ESA lesson is even more flexible, allowing for many different combinations of the three stages.
